The Norman Arch

In the 16th century the rooms and basement of the castle were turned into a prison. The castle was completely demolished in 1880 to make room for public gardens. The Norman Arch of Mazara del Vallo, was the doorway in the shape of an ogival arch to the castle built by Roger I d'Altavilla, after the city been freed from the Arab domination in 1072, and demolished in 1880 and turned into a public garden, the current Villa Jolanda.

Features

The Norman Arch dominates the opposite Mokarta Square (named after the Muslim warrior Mokarta, nephew of the King of Tunis who attempted the reconquest of the city in 1075) and is considered the most significant symbol of Mazara. In addition to the Great Count Roger, Frederick III of Aragon and Queen Eleanor of Anjou stayed in the castle in 1318, as well as Peter II of Sicily, King Martin I of Sicily and lastly King Alfonso II of Naples in 1495. In the 16th century the rooms and basements of the castle were used as a prison.
