Teatro Garibaldi

Following the revolutionary uprisings of 1848, and the consequent transfer of power from the Bourbons to a city committee, it was decided to acquire a emphyteusis room, for 36 ducats a year, and to appoint a commission to provide the city with a new theatrical structure. Canon Gaspare Viviani was commissioned to design a structure similar to the Garibaldi Theatre in Trapani, and in three months the theatre was built at a cost of 2,355 ducats, taken from a fund left by Bishop Scalabrini for the reconstruction of the port, and kept in the monastery of San Michele.

The theatre was inaugurated on January 12, 1849, with the name of Teatro del Popolo. The structure was later dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi with a resolution of March 5, 1862. Some great 19th century prose theatre artists performed in the theatre: we remember Giacinta Pezzana, who gave Teresa Raquin and the Marshal, and Tommaso Salvini, performer of Vittorio Alfieri and William Shakespeare, who gave fifteen performances in 1874. Starting in 1981, several attempts to restore the theatre began, which failed for various reasons. The last restoration, started in 2003 and finished in 2006, allowed the reopening of the structure to the public in 2010. Since 2011 the theatre has started to host shows again.
