S. Michael of the Normans

It is an example of baroque architecture in Mazara and is the result of the reconstruction of an ancient Norman church founded by Roger II. Its construction began in 1627 and lasted until the second half of the 18th century, involving both the exterior and the interior. The layout of the church is in the shape of a Latin cross with a single aisle and small side chapels. Tommaso Sciacca, author of the paintings of the altars and the fresco on the vault, and Bartolomeo Sanseverino with the allegorical figures in stucco (serpottesche), made the decorations. The altars in hard stone, the chancel, the side choir and the polychrome majolica contribute to provide a setting of extraordinary elegance. Outside, the 1771 bell tower and the airy portico of the monastery should not be missed.
