Canal Port of Mazara del Vallo

The canal port is the outlet of the Mazaro stream. On the left bank, in VI B.C., the Phoenicians established a commercial colony called Mazar (the castle). From 650 to 250 B.C., it became an Emporium of Selinunte. With the Roman conquest, the canal was transformed into Oppidum, and a centre of attraction for the African and Near Eastern routes at the end of the X century A.D. Throughout the twentieth century, the Port of Mazara del Vallo maintained the distinction of the most important fishing port in Italy. An unusual feature is offered by the phenomenon of the “Marrobbio“, which is created by the rapid alternation of tides in particular marine weather conditions that brings the water level to fall and rise again rapidly. For this reason, the Muslims, being enabled to make sense of the phenomenon, called the Mazaro wadi el magnum, that is “the river of the spirit“.
