Chiesa della Madonna delle Giummare

The church was built in the 11th century at the behest of the wife of Ruggero I d'Altavilla, Giuditta d'Evreux, in the same place where there was a watchtower and is called the Giummare for the type of dwarf palm, called giummara, which grows spontaneously in the area.

The church underwent various modifications over the centuries, until it became (from 1568 to 1810) an abbey of the Order of Malta, but still retains many of its original features such as the façade, which has a prothyrum on the left wall with two pointed arches, and the 14th century portal. Inside the church, traces of Byzantine frescoes depicting Saint Basil and Saint John Chrysostom have been found in two side niches. On the high altar there is a marble statue of the Madonna and Child by Giacomo Castagnola dated 1575.
