The Cathedral of ST. Salvatore

It was built at the behest of Roger I, conqueror and first Grand Count of Sicily, after a vote expressed during the battle against the Saracens in 1072. Etienne de Rouen, bishop and Norman monk, directed the works between 1086 and 1093, building it on the ruins of an ancient basilica destroyed by the Saracens in 826. The original Norman structure of the Cathedral survives today in a few elements: the apse and the walls of the transept. In fact, the church was rebuilt in the second half of the 1600s by Don Pietro Castro, thus assuming the style belonging to the Sicilian Baroque, basilica plan and Latin cross, with a mighty bell tower dominating the external facade. The history of Mazara Del Vallo is a marvel of faith, art and tradition; an extraordinary human journey of stone and colour figures that reveal an authoritative past rich in civilization and culture. The testimony of the splendour of this city can be found in its buildings; among these, the cathedral basilica is remarkable.

The interior of the Cathedral houses numerous frescoes and, of considerable importance, the marble group of the Transfiguration, a work executed in 1535 by Antonello Gagini, which stands majestically in the apse and on the central altar of the Cathedral. The sculptural composition depicts Jesus, in his divinity, on Mount Tabor. Around them, the prophets Moses and Elijah and the disciples Peter, James and John. The Cathedral Church dominates, also from the sea, the panorama of the city and stands out on a square, the Republic Square, which is an exceptional architectural jewel. A large vessel anchored to the banks of the theatre of memory that has seen more than nine centuries of life parade by. With its bulk, a symbol of divine royalty.
